WHAT DO WE LEARN ABOUT THE WORLD OF THIS NOVEL FROM THE DESCRIPTION OF ITS PHYSICAL LANDSCAPE AND THOSE WHO INHABIT IT?

Ishmael in Moby Dick is depicted as a person who has a strong sense of id because we know that he wants to get away from people,” this is my substitute for pistol and ball.” He knows that Id could take over in him, pistol and ball basically means violence, and he feels if he doesn’t get away from people he could become extremely aggravated. Whereas Pip in Great Expectations is depicted as someone who has missed the normal experiences a kid should have, ”never saw any likeness of them.” Kids personalities are formed on two things Parents, and their environment so since pip did not have the family part he is forced to invent himself round his environment. That is why he does not quite developed a super ego

Ishmael and Pip both have sense of id, or primal instinct, they know what they are capable of, “knocking people hats off.” Yet the difference is that Ishmael knows that he needs to keep it in and has a sense of reason and super ego, and of course the compromise is his love for the sea. The sea is what takes his mind off things, what stops him from returning to his primal instinct. Yet Pip on the other hand never developed a super ego and primarily is controlled by id, “childish conclusion.” This shows us that he has not quite developed super ego because children are mostly controlled by id. Pip has not grown up yet; we see that he has not quite grasped the sense of what is right and what isn’t right in society yet.

Ishmael and Pip both have a sense that they can take care of themselves and are self-sufficient. Ishmael can stand being on boat on his own which many people definitely couldn’t. Pip has not had family taking care of him, “neat row beside their grave.” His family has died and therefore he has learned to cope without his family, which can be a good thing, but also as I have explained can also be a bad thing.

Ishmael and Pip both seem to be people who take in the landscape around them. This has influenced Ishmael because of his love of the sea, “Say you are in the country; in some high land of lakes.” This suggests that because he is not one for shaping his life around people he is forced to notice the other things in life like nature. Pip is extremely similar in the fact that he takes in his surroundings as well, “marsh country, down by the river, within, as the river wound, twenty miles of the sea.” This is a fairly graphic description of a fairly simplistic thing. He has grasped this trait again by his absence of people in his life so he has shaped his life around his environment.

WHY LADY MACBETH IS THE MAIN CAUSE OF DUNCAN’S MURDER?

I am going to explain why I think Lady Macbeth is the main catalyst in the murder of Duncan and the reason why it happened.

Lady Macbeth has a large amount of control over Macbeth, which enables her to convince him to do it. She insults his manhood in order to get her way, “When you durst do it then you are a man.” He does not want to seem weak in front of his wife so she puts a challenge out there for him; this also goes with the fact Lady Macbeth bullies Macbeth. But there is a reason why Macbeth is so easily persuaded by his wife. She is weirdly determined to reach her goal, she would rather, “Have pluck’d my nipple out, from his boneless gums, And dashed the brains out.” She is saying that she would rather kill her baby in cold blood than go back on what she said. Therefore I sympathize with Macbeth in that if you had a wife who is this sick in the head then you would definitely go on anything they say.

Lady Macbeth plans the whole murder, which speeds up the rate at which the murder goes forward. Macbeth said that he did not want to go further in killing Duncan, so without Lady Macbeth cunning planning it would never have gone through, “look like the innocent flower, But-be the serpent under’t.” She is extremely meticulous and ruthless in her planning.

She fills Macbeth with confidence. She says, “We fail!” Remember she would rather kill a baby than go back on this, which reassures Macbeth that if this is going to be king then she will do it properly.

She is too obsessed with becoming queen. She says, “And fill me from the crown to the top-toe full.” This quote is mainly related to the fact that she wants to be evil when carrying out this deed but the fact that she uses crown suggests she is expecting to become queen. This confidence will also put Macbeth at ease, because he knows there is someone doing this with him with a lot of raw determination to get this done.

In conclusion these are my reasons why I think that Lady Macbeth is the main reason why the death of Duncan happened, and happened so quickly.

EXPLORE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO VERSIONS OF MACBETH AND HOW THEY TELL THE STORY OF THE PLAY”S OPENING?

During this response I will attempt to compare the older version of Macbeth to more modern one. I will be taking into account the setting, use of effects and music, how the characters play the part and any other dramatic technique worthy of mention.

Roman Polanski’s Macbeth is a slightly more old school version of the play, set in a similar setting to what the real story may be set in. It is set in a gloomy, damp and cold landscape, this just adds to the sinister sense of the opening of the story that we verbally get through the witches. There is a creaking sound made by the witches that conjures up a very evil and chilling feeling.

Macbeth and Banquo are both wearing elaborate armor, this makes me think that they will be strong and brave characters in the play, which we know they are not. They play their role with assertiveness, which adds to the strong, bold story line. On the changing of the scene there is a large noise made, almost sounding like a gong, which adds to then transition of the scene and progresses the story line. The way the witches play their character with the high-pitched wining voice connects the witches to cunning supernatural element, which they portray. In the background there is an eerie wind builds on the supernatural sense that is established.

In Rupert Goold’s take on Macbeth, he goes about it in a much more modern style. In the opening the music is extremely dramatic, and pungent almost like a heartbeat. This makes me feel like this mans life his hanging in the balance. The light drops when the witches start to speak which is a great dramatic technique and emphasizes the importance of the witches. When the witches are speaking there is an unnerving echo in the room, repeating what they say, this adds to the witches connection with the supernatural. Also having them dressed in nurses outfits is a useful statement. Nurses are portrayed as people who help people for a living, yet these witches have definitely not set out to help anyone apart from themselves. When Ross tells the good news there is victory music playing in the background that builds on the happy emotions in the room.

IN WHAT WAYS COULD “A VIEW FROM A BRIDGE” BE CONSIDERED A TRADGEDY?

In this piece I will be connecting “A view from a bridge” to the genre of tragedies in three main areas. How the opening of the play establishes a connection between the modern style of tragedies and the Greek era, How certain characters show traits that are connected with a tragedy and how the female characters are affected by the tragedy.

There are certain aspects of this play that are similar to the way a Greek tragedy would be played out. Greek tragedies are always centered on one particular place that in this play is Eddie’s apartment. Miller creates the fact that Eddie and his family was doomed from the start, we found that out in Alfieri’s opening speech, “Watched it run its bloody course.” This is a feature that is very common in Greek tragedies. In any tragedy whether it be Greek or modern it would consist of someone falling to a lower place than what they originally started on, the only difference is that in Greek tragedies they would use a king or a person of great wealth would have a tragedy, but in, “A view from a bridge,” Eddie is a fairly common man. Also consisting with Greek and modern tragedies fate plays a huge role, we from the start knew that Eddie was doomed, there was no doubt in our minds.

There are traits that the characters have portrayed which are consistent to every tragedy. In a tragedy there has to be an Achilles heel of the main character, in this play it was controlling personality of Eddie. This trait was always going to bring Eddie down. The tragedy is caused by his or her actions; in this case it was Eddies, this evokes a strange feeling, of sadness for the tragedy but realization that it was their fault. Also in all tragedies the characters are powerless to stopping their inevitable downfall, the tragedy is always destined to happen.

But in this play it is not just a tragedy of Eddie, the women in the play are hugely affected. Catherine suffers in the sense that she is sandwiched by the two men fighting over her, Eddie and Rodolpho. This causes her to feel different emotions, whilst starting to feel the transition she is making between a girl and a woman. Beatrice suffers in the sense that she is such a calm and levelheaded person, “Eddie, if you want my advice, go and tell her good luck. I think maybe now that you had it out you learned better,” yet she is not able to step in and take charge.

Miller depicts Alfieri as a very reasonable and & level headed person. ” I understand you. But the law is very specific, the law does not…” Firstly People always like to know where you are coming from, so for Alfieri to say “I know what you mean” just eases the tension a bit. He also states, “I have my own children.” This is Alfieri relating to the emotions of Eddie towards his children. Again this makes Eddie feel like Alfieri is someone he can easily share with. He also says, “There’s only one question here. The manner in which they entered the country.” Alfieri is a lawyer, and as a lawyer working on Eddie’s case he has to provide a option. As a lawyer Alfieri has to propose this rather awkward question towards Eddie.

Miller portrays Alfieri as an almost God like figure. He states that, “watched it run its bloody course.” This quote shows us how miller wants us to see him as a figure looking down on the play, he is a man watching from a distance through a telescope. Or even he could be symbolised as the bridge, this story is the view form Alfieri’s eyes.

HOW DOES MILLER CREATE TENSION AT THE END OF ACT 1?

Miller depicts huge tension at the end of act 1 by Marco’s clear protective instinct for Rodolpho. “A strained tension griping his eyes and jaw, his neck stiff, the chair raised like a weapon of Eddie’s head.” This quotation shows us the tension and anger between Marco and Eddie; this is Marco sticking up for his brother and giving Eddie a piece of his own medicine. This is Marco saying, hey if you want to intimidate my brother I will do exactly the same to you. Miller is emphasizing the sense that blood is thicker than water, in that despite Marco and Rodolpho wanting to come to America so badly, they will not let themselves be pushed around by Eddie.

HOW DOES MILLER PRESENT EDDIE ND ALFIERI’S CONTRASTING MINDSETS IN THIS SCENE?

HOW DOES MILLER PRESENT EDDIE ND ALFIERI’S CONTRASTING MINDSETS IN THIS SCENE?

Miller shows us how Eddie is trying to make something out of nothing, and Alfieri shows him that. Eddie says, “Paper Doll they call him now. Blondie now.” Eddie is depicting the unnerving mannerisms of Rodolpho, which Eddie might not like yet there is nothing in law against singing. Therefore Alfieri replies, “You have no resources in the law Eddie,” this is as if to say but this doesn’t count as an offense against the law, you will have to come up with something better to get what you want.

Miller Emphasizes the fact that despite how Eddie does not want the cousins here anymore, he would not go and turn them in for illegal immigration. Alfieri’s puts out the fact, “Well, they entered illegally,” then Eddie rapidly says, “Oh, Jesus, no I wouldn’t do nothin’ about that.” This shows how Alfieri is saying that this is the only way to fairly get Rodolpho out. Yet Eddie is stating that he would never go back on his community like that, it is the ultimate sin in Red Hook.

Miller portrays Alfieri seeing everything in a fair and just manner yet Eddie, due to his personality, only sees things from his perspective.  Eddie tries to work his way into the law, “You mean to tell me that there’s no law that a guy which he ain’t right can go to work and marry a girl and?” Yet Alfieri states how this is a weak argument, “ There is nothing you can do, Eddie, believe me.” This is showing how Eddie is just unjustly trying to get Rodolpho out of his home, whereas Alfieri, being a lawyer is trying to see both sides of the argument.

WHAT DO WE LEARN ABOUT EDDIE’S RELATIONSHIP WITH BEATRICE IN THIS SCENE

Miller portrays Beatrice’s unhappiness of her relationship with Eddie. Beatrice says, “When am I gonna be a wife again, Eddie.” This reveals a time frame; this shows us that she is yearning for what the relationship once was. She directly addresses the fact that she is not a wife anymore, wives should be loved and cared for and she is saying to Eddie that she doesn’t get that anymore. They are friends at most not husband and wife. Beatrice feels that Eddie is not focusing on the relationship and is too egotistic.

Miller depicts the fact the way in which Eddie immediately rejects anything that Beatrice says. Beatrice says, “What’s the matter with you? He’s a nice kid, what do you want from him?” Eddie sternly replies, “That’s a nice kid? He gives me the heebie-jeebies.” The speed that Eddie puts down her statement is blinding there is clear conflict in this. We can also see that he is making up rubbish just to go against Beatrice’s comment, the word “heebie-jeebies” is not a real word and just Eddie trying to think of a way to chip away at Beatrice.

Miller states that Beatrice and Eddie have completely contrasting opinions on Catherine and Rodolpho’s relationship. Firstly I would like to say that the number of times that Beatrice tries to convince Eddie about the relationship is unreal. “He’s a nice fella, hard workin’, he’s a good lookin’ fella”. Eddie replies, “He sings on the ships, didja know that?” Beatrice is defending him and Eddie focuses on his negatives and exaggerates them. This is so important, because for a couple to have such large contrasting opinions about there own daughter (niece) is a huge problem. This is a problem that can easily break up a relationship let alone a family!
